Subject Heading Changes
May 22, 2009 - Over the next couple of months HAPI will be implementing
changes to our Subject Headings. These changes reflect the
recommendations of our Subject Heading Task Force (composed of HAPI
staff, volunteer indexers/academic librarians) which reviewed our
Subject Thesaurus for dated terminology and subject areas in need of
additional headings.
It will be some time before all these changes are reflected in HAPI
Online. Where possible, we are making the
changes retrospectively in the HAPI database. For example, all
instances of the subject heading "Indians of Mexico" will
be changed to "Indigenous peoples of Mexico". You won't see
these changes online until we've completed all the changes for the
related set of headings (i.e., the heading "Indians of..."
and "Indigenous peoples of..." will not appear concurrently
in HAPI). As we complete these changes, we'll be noting
them here on the HAPI News page. If you have any questions, please

Changes and Additions
- - "Animals – Diseases" replaces "Animals – Diseases & Pests" as a subdivision.
- - "Bisexuals" is a new subject heading.
- - "Cantar del mío Cid" replaces "El Cid Campeador" and "Poema de mío Cid"
- - "Caribbean people" is a new subject heading.
- - "Citrus fruits – Diseases & Pests" (new subdivision).
- - "Colonization" is a new subject heading.
- - "Dentistry" is a new subject heading.
- - "Ecotourism" is a new subject heading.
- - "Environmental management" is a new subject heading.
- - "Foreign exchange" replaces "Foreign exchange problem"
- - "Gangs" is a new subject heading.
- - "Gay men" is a new subject heading.
- - "Health" replaces "Health and hygiene" as a subdivision
- - "Indigenous people(s)" replaces "Indians", e.g.:
- "Indigenous peoples of Guatemala"
- "Mixtec (Indigenous people)"
- "Indigenous peoples, Treatment of"
- - "Installation (Art)" is a new subject heading.
- - "Labor market" replaces "Labor supply"
- - "Leadership" is a new subject heading.
- - "Race and race relations" replaces "Race question"
- - "Rastafari movement" replaces "Ras Tafari movement"
- - "Romanies" replaces "Gypsies"
- - "Sustainable development" replaces "Ecology and development"
